Marist Hoops Insider

College of Charleston Preview

Marist returns to McCann Arena today, for the first time in 15 days, and takes the hardwood for the first time in 9, having played their last game December 22nd versus Hartford, where the Red Foxes fell 56-46. This homecoming pits them against the College of Charleston.

Nickname: Cougars

Location: Charleston, South Carolina

Conference: Southern Conference

Head Coach: Doug Wojcik

2011-12 Record: 19-12, 10-8 conference

Record this Season: 8-4, 1-0 conference

This is the first meeting between Marist and the College of Charleston in the history of their respective men’s basketball programs. For the Cougars, this game requires a vastly shorter period of preparation time than it does Marist, as they are coming off a 62-50 victory at the University of Vermont on December 29th, where Charleston’s leading scorer, Andrew Lawrence, scored 21 points for the Cougars. Charleston is currently undefeated on the road, carrying a 4-0 record into Poughkeepsie, with victories over Baylor (#24 in the country, at the time,) Charleston Southern, Elon, and Vermont. They rank 33rd in the nation in 3-point percentage, and pose a similar threat to Marist as did the 3-point-friendly attack employed by Canisius, who scored 94 points on the Foxes, in a 94-82 victory. They keys for Marist in this game will be shutting down Andrew Lawrence, who averages 13 points per-game, and shoots 39.6% from beyond the arc, and Anthony Stitt, who averages 11 points-per game, and shoots 45.5% from three. In the past, Marist head coach has suggested that the key to beating teams that make their living from the three point line is to out-rebound them, limiting their opportunities. If they are to do this, Adam Kemp will need to out-play Charleston’s Adejhi Baru, who averages just over 9 rebounds per game.

For Marist, the story remains largely the same. The outcome of this game will be largely dependent upon which Marist team that take the floor today. There’s the team that held Vanderbilt to 33 points in the Old Spice Classic, and there’s the team that was held to 46 points by Hartford, or the team that gave up 91 points to Army. The team will lean on Devin Price, who is averaging 14.9 points per game this season, and Chavaughn Lewis, who is averaging 12.25. They are currently in the midst of a two game losing streak that saw losses at Bucknell and Hartford. McCann Arena has been friendlier to Marist than road games and neutral sites, as they are 2-2 at home, versus a combined record of 2-6 on the road and at neutral sites. If there is any game to gauge the advantage the Red Foxes have at home, it is one like this, where they will face off against a team who has yet to lose on the road.
