Marist Hoops Insider

Game preview: Marist vs. Iona

The Marist men’s basketball team will return to the McCann Arena on Thursday evening for a matchup with Iona, the 2012 MAAC regular season Champions. Marist will be looking for its first win in six games and for its first win against the Gaels since Mar. 6, 2009.

Iona Gaels
Record: 9-6 (3-1 MAAC)
Leading scorer: Momo Jones (22.7 ppg)
Last game: Win vs. Manhattan, 78-70

Marist Red Foxes
Record: 4-11 (1-3 MAAC)
Leading scorer: Devin Price (14.1 ppg)
Last game: Loss at Canisius, 73-64

The Iona team that will come into the McCann Center is missing a couple big pieces from the one that knocked Marist out of the MAAC Tournament last season, but the Gaels still come in as the 10th-best scoring team in the country at 81.3 points per game. After they had an up-and-down first couple months of the season, they have now won four of five and three straight, including conference wins against Siena and Manhattan.

Leading Iona’s offensive attack is Lamont “Momo” Jones, a senior guard who scored 30 points in the Gaels’ win against Manhattan. Marist will also have to deal with returner Sean Armand, a three-point specialist averaging 18.1 points per game, and newcomer A.J. English, a three-time MAAC Rookie of the Week.

Marist will likely stay with its new starting lineup of Devin Price, Chavaughn Lewis, Manny Thomas, Phillip Lawrence and Adam Kemp. Jay Bowie remains out with an injury and no timetable to return. Thomas is averaging 9.75 in the last four games in his expanded role, while Lewis leads the squad with 20 points per game in that span. Marist, who averages almost 20 points per game less than Iona, will be heavily relying on their defense when the two meet in the McCann Arena tonight.
