Marist Hoops Insider

Preview: Marist at Iona

Tonight, the Red Foxes will take the floor in New Rochelle to face the Iona Gaels, for the second time this season. They squared off against Iona earlier this season in Poughkeepsie, where the Red Foxes fell to the Gaels 86-82 in a hard fought battle at the McCann Center– a location the Foxes have been noticeably better than on the road. The road does not get any easier for the Red Foxes tonight, as the Gaels have not lost a game at the Hynes Athletic Center yet this season (8-0).

For the Red Foxes, the key to the game will be playing solid defense. The Red Foxes have gone 0-6 in games where they allowed over 80 points, one of which was their last game against Iona. Devin Price is not expected to be in the lineup tonight, which is a brutal blow to an already struggling Red Foxes offense. The Red Foxes’ offense was struggling with Price in it, having him average 4 points below his season average over the last three games, but without him, it has seen some of the worst moments of the entire season. The last game the Foxes played without Price, they managed only 37 points against a Fairfield squad that was mired in a losing streak of their own. Thus, the key to tonight’s game will be a stepped up performance from the Red Foxes defense, as well as stronger performances from Chavaughn Lewis, Adam Kemp, and Isaiah Morton to fill the void the offense feels without Price. During the previous three-game stretch where Price was unable to play, Anell Alexis entered the lineup and averaged 11 points per-game, and could be expected to fill a similar role now with Price out for an undisclosed period of time.

Iona will be glad to see the friendly confines of Hynes Athletic Center after a tour of Buffalo that saw them drop two games to Niagara and Canisius, each by three points. For Marist to win, they will need to control the offensive assault that Iona will unleash with Lamont “MoMo” Jones (21.9 ppg) and Sean Armand (17.7 ppg.) Last time these two teams met Jones and Armand combined for 45 points, which was outdone by the 50 combined Price and Chavaughn Lewis provided for Marist, but the Foxes’ inability to play consistent defense allowed them to fall 86-82 to the Gaels. For a different outcome, the Red Foxes will need to control the boards, the tempo, and make sure the game stays low scoring. Without their main gun, they have no hope of winning a shootout.
