Marist’s winning streak was stopped at 2 on Friday night, when Niagara’s Juan’ya Green hit a three-pointer with 1.5 seconds left to propel the Purple Eagles past the Red Foxes, 57-54. While it wasn’t the result the Red Foxes were looking for, some of the positive trends they have been experiencing continued against the MAAC’s first place team. Adam Kemp remained strong with 17 points and 5 rebounds. Adam Kemp has become the focal point of the Red Foxes’ offense in the absence of Devin Price, and with Price expected to be out again when the Red Foxes go to Lawrenceville today to face Rider, this should not be expected to change.
Last meeting: Rider 64, Marist 58
Rider’s last time out: 72-57 W vs St. Peter’s
Rider’s leading scorer: Jonathon Thompson, 12.4 ppg
Rider’s record: 14-13 (9-6)
When Rider came to Poughkeepsie earlier this month, the Red Foxes struggled mightily with Jonathon Thompson, who was good for 23 points and 6 rebounds. However, the lead among all scorers belonged to Marist’s Chavaughn Lewis with 24. He will need to continue to contribute in the points column while Devin Price remains out with a sprained ankle. The last meeting with Rider was the last time the Red Foxes had Price at their disposal. However, going 2-1 while reshaping the focus of their offense has given the Red Foxes a bit more of a competitive edge recently than they have had over the course of the season. The Red Foxes will be sending much more of their offense into the paint than the last time these two teams met. The results have had the Foxes going punch-for-punch with the top teams in the conference.
With the Red Foxes directing much of the traffic toward Adam Kemp, his match-up with Rider center Dera Nd-Ezuma will be one to watch. Nd-Ezuma averages 2.6 points per game accompanied by 1.8 rebounds per game. Given the current pace Kemp is operating at, Nd-Ezuma appears to have his work cut out for him. He matches Kemp at 6-10 in height, however, at 215 he is 20 lbs lighter than the Red Foxes center. How Rider coach Kevin Baggett handles this match-up will be crucial to the outcome of this game.
